As a personal trainer (and socialite), I find myself engaged
in some very interesting conversations.
Two things I hear the most, "I don't really need any help with my
diet because I eat nothing but healthy foods" and "I don't eat fast food so I just need
someone to show me what exercises I need to do. Are you guilty of this? People
who have this mentality are on the right track, but they are missing one thing...direction.
If you were just called out; I want you to do a few things. Think of these as valuable golden
nuggets most Nutritionists will never tell you.
- Figure Out Your Total Energy Expenditure- Or to put it a little simpler, determine how many calories you need to fuel you through a normal day. So, if you're an occasional swimmer, couch potato, cross fitter, gym rat (or gym mouse/gerbil/hamster), or if you watch an exercise video in your living room...this is where we find the required amount of calories we need to perform these functions. I like to call it the magic number.
Ok, now that we have our magic number, it's time to see
if we are eating enough to fuel us
through our day or if "eating clean" is enough. The last step I need
you to do is log your meals for a week, and monitor your caloric intake each
day. Take a look at how much you are eating, and how much you "should" be
eating. Some of you might find that you're not eating enough to provide
you with the fuel you need to benefit the most from your training. And here's the serious kicker...you might find out that you are not eating
enough to lose weight! I can't emphasis enough on how important
it is to take action on what I mentioned above. Some people are attempting to lose weight while remaining in a huge caloric surplus, BUT it's okay because they don't eat any fried foods or they just eat healthy foods. As I've said before, knowing is half the battle and the other half is
direction. You are now in possession of
both to get you started. What are you going to do with it?
Yours in Fitness,
Derrick White
