Focus on Health, not Weight

Mindset Change for Better Results

The journey to live a healthier lifestyle is a tricky one.  At the beginning you're thinking about the amount of weight you need to lose to look or feel a certain way. You even go to the extremes (pills, wraps, weird diets) to gain this sense of accomplishment. The true secret to losing weight, if weight loss is your goal, is to change your mindset. Stop thinking about the numbers on the scale. Those numbers will change if you focus on living a healthier lifestyle anyway. Think about the psychology of this whole weight loss dilemma, and you tell me if it makes sense to you.

We lean towards unhealthy methods to feel and look healthy.

The different supplements we take may be harmful to our bodies, the obsession with what to eat leads to eating disorders, and our caloric goal becomes so low that our metabolism slows to the pace of a drunk snail. But Wait... You Want to Look & Feel Healthy Right? These are the typical measures people take to reach their ideal weight. And, they are very unhealthy in all aspects of wellness. Change your mindset to wanting live healthier instead of only losing weight, and the results will surprise you. Not only will you lose weight but you will feel better about yourself...which is the ultimate goal. You will be able to play with your child(ren) without feeling out of shape and you will truly enjoy life.

Two Helpful Tips to Change Your Mindset:

  1. Hide the Scale. Actually, throw that thing away. Now you will be forced to recognize the physical changes you see in the mirror or by the way your clothes fit.
  2. Make a list of things you would do if you were in the shape to do them. "I want to run a 5k non-stop" or "I want to be able to do x,y, & z without feeling out of shape". Those are goals that focus more on ability and conditioning than weight loss.
It's easy to become desperate to shed pounds to regain the self confidence that we once had. You miss the feeling or you finally want to feel good about yourself.  Either way, it's completely understandable. But the focus should be to work towards a healthier life, and not solely on the numbers reflected on the scale.
